Quilted for Community
What a fun and inspiring event, filled with the spirit of generosity and community. Almost 200 people attended the Socially Responsible Sweatshop fundraiser, Quilted for Community, held at Christ Episcopal Church.
Thanks to the bequest of 29 quilts from Shirley VanValkenburg, the idea to initiate a fund raiser for SRS operational expenses was envisioned. Of the 49 quilts displayed for sale, 41 were sold, including the raffle quilt. Guests were able to bid on 5 exceptional, silent auction quilts as they viewed the beautiful display set in this historic church sanctuary. We could not have done this without the hlp of thirty-five dedicated volunteers!
Lunch-by-donation, sponsored by church members, was a big attraction with 125 people enjoying delicious homemade soup, salad and deserts with breads donated by the Brimfield Bread Oven. The church has been the home of SRS for the past 4 years.
Our SRS boutique had excited shoppers browsing our spring collection of items and buying gifts for themselves, friends and family. We had our biggest sale day ever!
An opportunity to talk with our partner agencies, who help feed food insecure people in our community, was a meaningful way to understand the importance of their work and ways we can all join in this vital cause.
And finally, the video, “The SRS Story” premiered to rave reviews, showcasing the 13-year journey and mission of the organization. Kudos to Dave Smeltzer, the producer and director.
In 2025 SRS raised $60,000 from the sale of handmade items. Designed, produced and sold by our volunteers, who use recycled/upcycled materials, these proceeds are donated 100% to local organizations who address food insecurity.
The money raised from Quilted for Community will be used to sustain and support the operations of the Socially Responsible Sweatshop. We are thankful for all of our community partners, volunteers and friends who helped make this event a success.
Of the event, Julie B. said, “I loved the event! It was a collective effort of time, skill, and commitment by so many people!” Organizers said they were deeply moved by the generosity and strong support shown by the community.
THANK YOU ALL! This community is like a beautiful quilt!
